Derby Day - Fashion on the Field 2010

Despite all the rain, Derby Day's Fashion on the field boasted hues of black, white and ivory - which all contrasted the grey cloudy sky over Flemington Race Course.

For the women finals; designer dresses such as Nicola Finetti were amongst the popular choices, whilst brands such as Cue and Wittner sprinkled their magic upon the catwalk.

Of course garments from the legendary Chanel were worn and the feeling of subtle, simple and elegant styles were embraced.

Winner - 28 year old Martha Lynn from Ireland (who was only holidaying) took home a $2500 Myer gift card and a night's accomodation at the Sofotel in Melbourne, Collins St.

Overall, an impressing day that really evoked the true woman in us all.

The Myth of Egyptian Cotton?

I’m sure by reading the title of this piece you are most likely thinking ‘what is she talking about?’ Well, for as long as I can remember there has always been this grand epidemic of how “Great” Egyptian cotton is. You see it in movies, where the Casanova character is seducing his woman with the finest sheets from Egypt, or the classy fashion forward guy who works in the city and buys nothing but Egyptian cotton shirts.

It never crossed my mind to question it; I mean cotton is not exactly the fire burning everybody’s lips these days. But once I landed a job in corporate wear I began learning more and more about fabrics. The different weaves and folds, the quality and how it is actually made, my mind began to hit re-wind to a time my mother bought me a book about cotton. I didn’t actually read it, I flicked the glossy pages and smelt the middle – I just loved books; and this was one I should have read.

Sure enough years have passed and now I’m in need of some cotton education! So whilst working I would occasionally hit Google and go on a rampage. But it wasn’t until a few weeks of research in my new job that I finally hit a brick wall; a mid-aged man came in to purchase a shirt and asked me ‘Are they Egyptian cotton?’ I quickly said no, ‘Well I’m not buying them then’. I couldn’t respond with a good enough explanation to change his mind and he left.

So, what is it about Egyptian cotton that is so good? Well it is just cotton isn’t it? I mean any cotton grown in Egypt could be named Egyptian cotton, so how do we really know which one is the finest? Egyptian cotton is known for its longer fibres and durability, it is connected to the luxurious high end fashion and bedding materials. Yet, interestingly enough Egyptian cotton should be really called American cotton; because it is one particular species of American cotton that was introduced to Egypt; which is now the famous Egyptian cotton!

So when buying Egyptian long stapled cotton be cautious; it could be American long stapled cotton or if it is mixed with fillers – don’t be fooled because real Egyptian cotton is durable enough without any fillers.

Feeling a little confused? Well, so was I – but I guess the most important thing to note is that cotton actually dates back to the 5th century B.C from Iran (Persia) and funnily enough Peruvian and Mexican textiles resemble those found in ancient Egyptian tombs. So what’s to say they actually ever did come from Egypt?

Fine premium European mills are just as high end as Egyptian mills, since the Spanish were introduced by Arab traders to woven fabric in the ninth century, Milan and Venice in the 14th century.

Now that years have passed and society has ruled out Egyptian cotton as the best; many manufacturers are actually creating mixed weaves for mass production to sell to the public. Now in my fashion world I wouldn’t want to be paying lots of money for a half weaved Egyptian cotton shirt – I’ll just stick to my premium Europeans and know that quality is at my best.

So whether it’s Egyptian or not doesn’t really matter, cotton has been thrown all over the world with a long history behind it. I don’t know about you but I’m sure convinced!

Last night I got the fantastic opportunity to watch Alex Perry's 'Arabian Princess' fashion launch in Sydney - Fox Studios.

Think elegant chiffon, sparkling sequins, outrageous zebra prints, sexy black and wild violets!

The range covered a broad topic of the Arabian Goddess - a strong symbol of feminity, strength and mythology. The music played supported the theme and made you feel like you were in Mecca, the physical centre of Islam - it took my imagination on a journey through rough desserts with an array of powerful women that create a sublime; almost supernatural power amongst mankind.

The Prodigy of Tali Roth!

Since the phenomenon of young Tali Roth bombarded Melbourne’s fashion scene; excitement has filled my eyes once again! After dazzling us with her first collection, Roth is back with a sexy, strong and flattering winter line sparkling with an amazing colour palette of beautiful greys, vibrant oranges and electric purples.

“I took a lot of inspiration from geometric shapes and combined that with a very 80’s feel with a modern and wearable edge. The knitwear in particular was inspired by luxurious 80’s skiwear that you could imagine an elegant woman of that time wearing on a ski trip to Aspen. I also used music to help develop and connect the collection.”

Details are so simple but significant in Roth’s range. I particularly like the way a simple two-coloured dress with one effortless shape (check out the contrast sleeve scoop black dress) has such a strong effect on the eyes. The knits used to make these garments look fabulous and work well for the upcoming chilled months of Melbourne winter.

Roth explains “I source my fabrics locally and overseas. I like to support local fabric manufacturers but when it comes to specialized fabrics and beadings that I have designed I like to have that made by specialists overseas.”

Another interesting piece is the Triangle Trim knitted jacket in Orange/Purple colour, with striking colours and beautifully crafted knitting; this piece is a hot pick for next season’s cold months.

“When I was nine I first realized I was very energized by design and by different clothing. It took me though a long time to realize that I could actually do this as a career!”

Yes - Roth has come a long way since her childhood dreams and has truly created something inspiring, mesmerising and is surely going to further prosper in the future. Well done Tali!

I love Melbourne’s laidback and unpretentious nature. The café culture and the restaurants and the fashion is the best in Australia.

2. What are your future goals/plans for the label?
My goal is to continue to develop my brand and really connect to my customer and provide them with beautiful, original luxurious clothing. I would also like to eventually branch out and make other fashion items under the Tali Roth name.

Do your research. Combine what you are good at with what the marketplace needs and if you have enough patience and passion you can be successful!

I dont know about all of you out there; but there's one place I'd love to be right now - Milan.

It's where all of the "it" fashionista's are hanging out these days, and all the young flawless talents are rising and featuring in the latest fashion shows.

Just passing now was the Milano Unica (Italian trade fair featuring top-end Italian and European fabrics and acessories)expedition, it was held on the 8th til 11th of September this year in Fieramilanocity, Milan.

Vampire Obsession?

Since the latest twilight saga has been released into the world, there has been a bombardment of overwhelming fans who are over the point of obsession. Twilight has made a new era - for the return of the Vampire! Now, with shows like True Blood, it is quite evident that the obsession with Vampires is no way near its end. It has only begun, and to add a little spark to the whole issue I thought I would add on here a garment which I found quite interesting to this issue...

It is the Dorothy Perkins Black power sleeve dress (in black) that has caught my eye and I think would be popular in an era full of vampires ;) Maybe Edward would find this kind of outfit sexy! I certainly rate it = 8/10

Russian Roulette...

I don't know about you - but every morning I seem to be in a rush to get ready for the long day ahead of me. I never thought about how fast-paced our lives were becoming until the day my uncle died. For many out there; this is something they have had happen in their life. But, for a young twenty-one year old I find it quite mind-boggling that somebody could leave this earth in such a quick time.He taught me to open my eyes and just go for it!

Hence, I moved to Sydney from Melbourne a few months ago to follow my dreams. So many incidents have occured where I have really stopped to think - what are we all doing rushing our lives? For what? To be better than eachother? Or richer than one another?Life goes by so fast and the last thing you want to think of is the missed opportunities in your life because of this hectic life we live today.Too many of us worry about money and our love lives.

It's time women get up and smell the fresh air. Life is not about the superficial things in life. It is a new moment everyday, helping somebody in need - like the lady at central who follows me for spare change. Did they know where their lives were going when they were too consumed in their superficial ways of life? No.Or the women who spend thousands of dollars on items they don't need just to feel good.Sometimes the best things in life are free - and until we all learn that the world will never stop to think or relax.

We are so stuck in our ways it's about time somebody puts their foot down and steps back to reality - it could be you, the girl next-door or even the woman who makes your morning coffee. As Coco Chanel said - "In order to be irreplaceable one must always be different." So, what are you waiting for?

Signature look - corsets!

They've been around for centuries! Yes! Yes! It's the corset! A sexy number these days; corsets were once only used in BC to flatten or push up breasts or to flatten the tummy - or do both!

It gives that perfect curvy shape to a womans bust/stomach and can reflect that signature look you're after! They are fun, different and each one is distinct in its own way - I dont think they'll ever go out of fashion! My one (above) was given to me by my bestfriend when I returned from my trip to the U.S over a year ago, but I have a few different ones.... I need to find more places where they make those classic looks! Ill add some links after I have..

The Art of Fashion...

When you hear the word 'fashion', what ideas pass your mind?

Amongst the world stage where the designers prance with creativity; not many people stop to think about the actual concept of fashion. More and more people just sweep the surface filling their cupboards with the latest emerging labels and do not stop to consider the roots of where it all came from.

So as I scramble through old books and articles I find that most designers started from the bottom – selling their ideas at markets, to friends and these days online. All these ideas are becoming a filter for the youth of today in opening their eyes to the idea that there are no limits. The world is your oyster and anyone can have a piece in the art of fashion.
It is becoming more popular these days to make your own clothes. Add a little detail and turn a garment into something of your own. Just like blogging – people were not writers before they made their own blog, or even flicker where everyday people’s pictures are now being commented all around the world! It just goes to show with a little individuality, creativity can go a far way.

The perfect example was aired a couple of days ago on ‘The world today’, a current Australian ABC radio show hosted by Peter Cave. The topic covered today was about ‘fashion hacktivism ‘ , yes quite a strange word which does not appear in the Oxford dictionary but made sense to me when listening to the ways fashion has become less conservative and more so functioning like a computer – where people need to start hacking into their clothes.

The idea of ‘hacking’ into your own clothes struck a chord with me and I found myself digging through my old pieces, quite surprised at what I found but quite excited to start something new, different and totally a one off! The beauty about this is nobody else will have it but you!
So, where to go from here? Simple, put down your celebrity wannabe ego and take on the inspired and creative new you! Follow these five steps to the new artsy fashionista lurking inside of you.

1. Start cutting out pictures out of magazines, patterns, anything that inspires you!
2. Go back to those old pair of jeans you loved and give them a new look
3. Remember: fashion isn’t all about money and with a recession going on, start looking for cheap buys to update your wardrobe and keep your wallet heavy
4. Forget about what people think, most successful designers or anyone in the industry have had their hardship and look at them now
5. Don’t forget to just be you – it will show in what you wear

Katie Hosking - Melbourne designer

Do you ever frantically rush through the racks of clothes in a boutique to find that it is not Australian made? I don’t know about you; but I sure am one to take note of a garment’s background and I particularly feel a tingle of excitement when I see it has been made in Australia. It gives me that sense of home and that we as a young country are boasting our flawlessly talented designers into the world of fashion.

For one Melbourne designer – Katie Hosking sure knows how to please our kind. Her botanical, inspiring, creative and practical designs are creating quite a stir amongst people’s lips. Natural and Australian made is her number one priority – and believe me she has kept to it!
“I love attention to detail, this season I have been inspired by rustic romance, with shades of tea stained neutrals, cinnamon, nettle green and ballet pink. We use highlight details of crochet buttons and lace. Subtle decorations of embroidery, frills and metallic wallpaper prints, also capture the seasons soft romantic feel. Fabrications such as ultra soft silk knits in traditional tailored silhouettes provide comfort for all day wear.

Katie admits to endless hours of sewing as a child, after studying fashion she was lucky enough to land a job in a women’s surf wear label and then went on to design women’s street wear. Later on, she changed to designing women’s accessories and looks back upon her ten years of experience as a value to her business with all the knowledge she had gained.

A part from her fashion world Katie explains “I’d like to do my bit for humanity; I’d love to be more involved in helping developing countries. I have a curiosity and interest in jewellery design; I may study this sometime in the future, when time permits!”

My 'Style Melbourne' article on Isabel Engelhardt. . .

As I flick through the pages of my favourite fashion magazine; the illuminating images bounce back at me and I am mesmerized by the array of hot new trends dancing around my eyes. For every fashion-infatuated person out there, lies the influence under it all. The images that showcase the beauty and uncanny fashion world derive from one press of a camera button. Behind it all are those talented photographers, such as Isabel Engelhardt, who take an idea and transform it into something superb, unique and, at best, an unconditional work of art.

“As a child I always wanted to be a painter. Then, as a teenager, I got my first SLR camera and from that moment got hooked on painting with light,” says Isabel who studied photography with an emphasis on fashion photography in Munich, Germany, for five years. She spent some time in London and recently moved to Melbourne this January.

“Fashion photography allows you very much creative space and freedom and I love to stage people, so this is the main focus of my work besides beauty and portrait photography. The process of developing an idea within a team, creating the images in my mind and making them come true is very rewarding to me”

At the moment she is organizing her next fashion shoot with an Australian magazine (that we cannot reveal yet) and is planning a project with Erin O’Brien, a talented young fashion designer from Melbourne. “I’m always happy to work with aspiring designers.”

Isabel has been involved in many projects but describes her most challenging photoshoot in Spain, “…our crew had to fight with very short nights, amazingly bad food and desert-like temperatures. Which was challenging but we ended up having awesome results which was very satisfying.’

When describing her job Isabel relies on “coffee, coffee, coffee” to assist her in transformation of ideas into unique images. Her love for Melbourne began as soon as she landed with her love for live music, cheap sushi and a city where she stumbles by tiger snakes on her way to do some shopping! While her success in Melbourne is persevering, the art in her fashion photography astounds me, makes me think about concepts of light and to really push the idea that all colours depend on light. I’m convinced her greatest work is not finished with yet – so keep a careful eye on her as I’m sure she will bounce back with something spectacular very soon.

I actually love to shop for food in Victoria Market.

My favourite place in Melbourne is the barbeque site in the Yarra Bend Park, near the Studley Boat House - A beautiful & quiet spot by the river with lots of wildlife. As soon as the sun sets the whole place gets invaded by possums and flying foxes.

5. What’s your advice to aspiring fashion photographers?
Get inspired but do not copy. Treat models like human beings. Don’t take it too serious and keep your sense of humour.
